Business leader welcomes Coventry airport decision

A business leader says Coventry will be put on the international map after planners finally gave partial approval for expansion of Coventry Airport (see this earlier coventry airport news story).
At a planning meeting on Monday, Warwick District Council agreed a mitigation package with TUI - the company that leases the airport from owners Coventry City Council - to lessen the noise impact for nearby residents, and approved the current temporary terminal. They also granted permission for airport parking for 2,000 cars at the airport.
Brian Woods-Scawen, chairman of the Coventry, Solihull and Warwickshire Partnership, an organisation that encourages private, public, voluntary and education sectors to work together for the prosperity of the area, said today: 'Coventry has been hit badly in recent months with the loss of jobs in the manufacturing industry but the success of the airport will give the city the opportunity to attract new investors in other sectors to recover from this blow.'
'It is vital for the future economic prosperity of Coventry that the airport grows. Future jobs and investment were reliant on this decision and I'm delighted that common sense has prevailed,' he added.
He welcomed the decision of the district council to end its opposition to the temporary passenger terminal, which is still subject to a public inquiry. The massive new airport car park will surround the temporary terminal.
