Liverpool Airport strike to end this month
07.01.12
A strike by baggage handlers at Liverpool Airport will end this month, the Echo reports. Relations between Servisair and the GMB union remain tense after a month-and-a-half of discontinuous action, which has seen staff walk out for two hours in a morning and afternoon, four days a week, over plans to cut between 28 and 35 workers in a move it says would multi-skill staff.
The GMB union has rejected the plans for compulsory redundancies, describing the decision as ‘blatant profit-making’, but the Echo reports that the strike must end by January 31, when it will reach the legally-defined 12-week period. If that happens, the union said its members would return to work, but added relations between staff and management would be at ‘an all-time low’.
The union confirmed it would not proceed with industrial action beyond January 31 because it would be deemed unofficial.
