Council to object to Manston Airport night flights plan
21.04.12
Kent's Manston Airport in could help meet aviation capacity needs in the South East, Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers told delegates at a transport conference. She said that a solution other than expanding Heathrow was needed and that ‘some would like to see Manston play a role in meeting our aviation capacity needs’.
North Thanet MP Sir Roger Gale told the BBC: ‘This is very significant indeed. It is the first time that any senior transport minister has recognised the potential of Manston. We have been saying for a long time that, given the right rail links and good road links, there is no reason why Manston should not play a major role in aviation in the south east.'
‘We are losing business to Holland, we are losing business to France - we can't wait 20 years [for the proposed Thames Estuary airport] - Manson is there now and Justine Greening and Theresa Villiers have recognised that.’
Manston already has the ability to accommodate intercontinental flights and also has the second longest runway in the South East after Heathrow.
