Kent airports to get extra Olympic flights
14.08.11
Manston, Lydd and Rochester airports in Kent will become important transport hubs during the London 2012 Olympics. They have all been earmarked by Government for additional use during the Games, and have been designated ‘temporarily co-ordinated’ for use with additional flights alongside Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City.
Chief executive of Kent International (Manston) Airport, Charles Buchanan, said the airport was perfectly placed to welcome visitors and athletes and was anticipating a major increase in traffic during the period of the Olympics. He said: ‘With a runway longer than many of the airports in the list, including Luton and Birmingham, and all the other airports in the south east, Manston is able to handle Boeing 747s and Airbus A340s.'
Lydd Airport has also been earmarked under Government’s Airports Slot Allocation (Amendment) Regulations 2011 to play a vital part in transportation. New temporary rules will ensure that air space capacity over the south east will be able to accommodate the maximum possible number of extra flights.
The airport has been rated as capable of handing up to 238 general and business aviation flights during the peak period, from July 21 to August 15, 2012. A spokesman said it is delighted at being selected to play a part in welcoming overseas and UK visitors to the Olympics and Paralympics.
