09.08.07
Ryanair said it is setting up its 21st base in Alicante, Spain. Europe's biggest budget airline will initially base two Boeing 737-800s, representing a US$140m investment. Earlier reports had suggested that it would establish a base in Valencia too, with a second announcement expected this week.
The airline already operates six routes from Alicante, to Dublin, Duesseldorf, Liverpool, London, Pisa, and Stockholm. Ryanair will add another eleven routes from November, meaning that the company's 21st hub will launch with a total of 17 routes.
New routes include flights to East Midlands, Robin Hood and Bournemouth airports in the UK, along with routes from Baden Baden, Basel, Billund, Brussels, Gothenburg, Maastricht, Milan and Paris.
Ryanair's CEO, Michael O'Leary, said: 'Today's new base announcement will treble [Ryanair's] passenger numbers [at the airport] to 1.5 million annually, sustaining 1,500 local jobs.'
