Fresh call to rename Durham Tees Valley Airport
29.06.11
James Wharton, the MP for Stockton South, has called for Durham Tees Valley Airport to change its name back to Teesside the Evening Gazette reports. It follows a recent meeting he had with airport bosses including airport director Mike Morton.
The airport’s fortunes have declined in recent years. It was recently taken over by Vancouver Airport Services and Mr Wharton has called for a long term plan of investment and support, including a change in the name back to Teesside. He believes most residents would support such a change.
Mr Wharton told the newspaper: ‘It would be far more sensible to go back to Teesside Airport, which everyone understands and which is still on most of our road signs. Renaming Teesside Airport Durham Tees Valley was one of the sillier things done by those who were trying to sell the failed Tees Valley brand. Everyone knows where Teesside is.’
