MP wants Government support for Durham Tees Valley – Heathrow flights
21.01.12
An MP has called on the Government to help reinstate the route between Durham Tees Valley Airport and Heathrow in a bid to save the struggling regional airport, the Gazette reports. Stockton South MP James Wharton has called on Transport Minister Theresa Villiers to support the move - saying it would make the airport more saleable and provide a boost to the region.
Formerly a popular route, the Heathrow link was discontinued in 2009 as a result of high charges for landing slots at Heathrow. A service from Durham to Gatwick was axed in 2006. Mr Wharton believes reintroducing a Heathrow route would help secure the airport’s future. He told the newspaper Durham Tees Valley is a ‘great facility with the potential to be hugely successful with the right buyer. But we must all do what we can to build on that potential. If a Heathrow route can be secured it would be a game changer for the airport.'
‘Had the previous Government intervened to ensure that provision for regional flights was made in national airports, it would be more profitable and successful today. We have a chance to make the case for a Heathrow link again and I will be doing what I can to fight for Teesside.’
