Eastern to axe Durham Tees Valley Southampton flights
14.08.11
Durham Tees Valley Airport was dealt another blow after Eastern Airways confirmed its Southampton service will be axed from next month, the Northern Echo reports. The announcement came after airport bosses admitted they were struggling to secure new routes that would turn around the fortunes of the loss-making facility.
The last flight to Southampton will take off on Friday, September 2, with falling passenger numbers behind the decision to suspend the twice-daily service, which started in November 2009. Eastern’s four flights a day from Durham Tees Valley to Aberdeen, used mainly by workers in the oil and gas industry, will continue.
A spokesman for Eastern Airways said: ‘At a time when the economic climate is still very challenging and fuel costs continue to rise sharply, we have taken a tough decision to withdraw and concentrate on our core routes, as this service is not commercially viable.’ Affected passengers are being notified and will be offered a full refund.
