Big jump in passengers at Durham Tees Valley Airport
13.03.11
Durham Tees Valley Airport saw a big jump in passengers in the first two months of the year. There were 47% more passengers in January (17,203 in total) than in the same month last year and 24% more in February (16,266 in total). With figures for three out of the last four months moving up - the exception was December when the snow and ice led to a slight decline - airport director Mike Morton said there was evidence that the airport is ‘fighting back.’
Mr Morton said: ‘It’s no secret that Durham Tees Valley has had a tough time over the last couple of years, but I believe that with the turnaround that began in November we are starting to head in the right direction. Provisional statistics for January from the Civil Aviation Authority show our percentage increases in both passengers and flights were among the highest recorded for any UK airport.'
‘What is especially significant is that the Passenger Facility Fee, which we introduced in mid-November, does not appear to have had a negative impact on our passenger figures. The evidence from talking to many of our customers is that they recognise that the fee is needed to secure the financial stability of the airport and enable us to plan for its long-term future.’
