An airline passenger will be compensated after his designer sunglasses were stolen by staff at Durham Tees Valley Airport, the Northern Echo reports. Steve Mellor had asked a friend to take the £170 sunglasses to Turkey last September to give to his stepson as an early Christmas present.
The gift wrapped sunglasses were in the passenger’s hand luggage and that they disappeared after the bags had undergone a security search at Durham Tees Valley Airport. Mr Mellor, who lives in Guisborough, east Cleveland, said that he was angry at not having received compensation for the sunglasses and that they went missing during heightened security procedures at airports.
Durham Tees Valley airport initially refuted his claims that the sunglasses had been stolen. He told the newspaper: ‘After a month of me badgering them, they investigated it and looked back through their CCTV.’ Two members of staff employed by a contractor to check hand luggage were dismissed following the investigation.
A spokesman for Durham Tees Valley said: ‘We have been in touch with Mr Mellor and we will be taking steps to ensure that reimbursement for the missing sunglasses is paid within the next few days. It should be stressed that we did investigate this matter thoroughly and the two individuals involved, working for a security company employed at the airport at the time, were dismissed.’
