Durham Tees Valley Airport second from bottom in Europe

Durham Tees Valley Airport has been named among the worst in Europe for passenger figures for the second year in succession, the Northern Echo reports. Passenger numbers last year fell by 63,000 to 225,000, a drop of 22.1 percent, putting it behind all but one of Europe’s leading airports, according to a survey by Airline Network News and Analysis. The airport was second bottom in a table of 300 European airports – a year after it came last.
Only Shannon Airport, in Ireland, fared worse last year, with passenger figures falling 37.2 percent. From 2008 to 2009, the online magazine’s figures showed passenger numbers fell at Durham Tees Valley by 359,000 to 288,000 – 55.4 percent. It means the airport has lost more than two-thirds of its passengers in two years – to levels not seen since 1975.
Airport bosses say they are not surprised by the news, but point to a number of positive developments. Robin Tudor, from airport operator Peel Airports, said: ‘While that may be the case looking backwards at 2010, we remain confident in going forwards. We have already seen some growth this year in passengers and operators.’
Another three British airports – Newquay, Humberside and Blackpool – were in the bottom ten of the survey.
