Hundreds back 'Teesside Airport' campaign
09.07.11
Hundreds of people have backed a campaign to get Durham Tees Valley Airport to change its name back to Teesside Airport, the Evening Gazette reports. The airport changed its name from Teesside to Durham Tees Valley (DTV) in 2004. However, almost 900 people have voted for it to change back on the Gazette’s website, with more sending in coupons printed in the paper.
Local MP James Wharton has also pledged to keep up the pressure to get the airport’s Teesside name reinstated. The Stockton South MP has been delighted with the response to his call for the Durham Tees Valley moniker to be axed.
He believes that rebranding the airport as Teesside would be an important statement showing its new owners wanted to listen to the community.
Mr Wharton told the newspaper: ‘I will be writing again to the airport director (Mike Morton) and the parent company (Vancouver Airport Services) when the final results of the Evening Gazette’s online and coupon poll are known. I think this is a great opportunity for the new owners of the airport to show they want to work with people in the local community.’
