Hundreds watch Lancaster takeoff at Coventry Airport
26.04.07
Hundreds of people watched the UK's only flying Lancaster bomber take to the skies above Coventry Airport yesterday. The World War II aircraft took off on a test flight after almost eight months of restoration.
Mechanics based at the airport stripped the plane down and gave it a complete mechanical overhaul, the first time it has been done by a civilian firm. It is one of only two working Lancasters in the world (the other is in Canada.)
The plane is expected to fly to RAF Coningsby, in Lincolnshire, tomorrow for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The bomber is due to fly along with three Spitfires and two Hurricanes.
