Council's concern over Coventry Airport expansion plans

Leicestershire County council chiefs have registered 'very serious concerns' over plans to expand Coventry Airport. They are concerned that the plans would mean even more aircraft flying over homes in Leicestershire.
The county council is already campaigning to get Nottingham East Midlands Airport designated, giving the Government more control over the number of night flights. Now it has contacted Warwickshire District Council about expansion plans for Coventry Airport, which are to be discussed at a public inquiry in January next year.
County council transport spokesman Nick Rushton said: 'Our residents are going to end up suffering from aircraft coming from all directions at this rate. Leicestershire will become one huge airport hangar unless we can get assurances we're not just a dumping ground for aircraft from various airports.'
'We've got some very serious concerns about this expansion, and we will be putting those to the inquiry. The Government also needs to step in and be prepared to limit the flights going over this county.'
Coventry Airport wants a permanent passenger terminal and 3,800 extra airport parking spaces. It was originally a freight terminal but has seen a surge in passenger flights since German firm TUI started operating Thomsonfly flights from about 04:00 until 23:30.
