Coventry Airport airspace changes alarm locals
25.05.06
The length of three football pitches is all that could separate villagers' homes and gardens from screaming jets, according to news reports. This will happen if plans are approved to change the way airspace around Coventry Airport is managed.
Having already braced themselves for the possibility of more flights from Coventry airport, protesters have now learned that noise from Thomsonfly's 737 jets may be even worse than originally suspected - as the aircraft would fly below those from Birmingham.
Coventry Airport's managers are applying to control their own airspace, which currently comes under the auspices of Birmingham Airport. Consultant Grant Riddick, acting on behalf of the airport's managers, claims the changes will ensure a smoother and quiter descent for aircraft .
Coventry Airport spokeswoman Sue Lindsay declined to comment on the fears, as the issue is being debated at an inquiry at Leamington town hall into whether a 10,000 sq m terminal capable of handling two million passengers per year should be built at the aiprort. The inquiry is due to finish in June, with the government having the final say on whether the plans go ahead.
