Heavy traffic expected at Coventry Airport Help for Heroes Event
23.09.10
Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys carefully during a Help For Heroes event at Coventry Airport on Sunday. The event could attract up to 20,000 visitors and will be held at the airport in Baginton from 09:00 to 17:00.
Police have put a traffic management plan in place to ensure minimal delays and disruption for visitors and other road users. Visitors without prepaid tickets will be directed to two car parks where they will be taken by bus to the event. Parking is free in Coventry City Centre and there is a charge to park at nearby Brandon Speedway.
During the day, Warwickshire Police BikeSafe will be offering free BikeSafe assessed ride outs. Riders can take their bikes into the event and will be directed to the BikeSafe area.
The warning comes after it was announced that of Britain’s first jet fighters have been added to the line-up for this weekend’s Fly In event. The Venom jets, which are the only two still capable of flying, will be spotted over the skies when they join a host of other iconic military aircraft for the event, which is raising money for the charity Help for Heroes.
The planes will join the legendary RAF Vulcan bomber and the Tornado jet which will be landing on the Baginton airport’s runway on Sunday.
Visitors to the Fly-in will also be given the chance to test their natural flying skills by taking on the Hover Challenge. They will be able to try and hold a helicopter in a steady hover, one of the most difficult skills an airman has to master.
Participants will be accompanied by an instructor and will be given a demonstration of the controls before trying to keep the helicopter within a 20metre circle for as long as possible. The person who manages to hover the longest will win a free helicopter flight and flying lesson.
