Last council meeting on Coventry airport expansion
22.09.05
Members of Warwick District Council are being advised by senior planning officers not to oppose further development of Coventry Airport. Planning officers are recommending councillors give their support as long as a series of measures are put in place to appease nearby residents, including grants for noise insulation and a restriction on night flights.
Controversial plans submitted in November last year to establish a larger passenger terminal are debated on Thursday night. Although the final decision rests with the government, the outcome of this debate will be the last chance for councillors to influence the outcome. Protesters are expected to voice their objections at the council meeting.
Two public inquiries are due to be held into various aspects of the expansion application but the government will be asked to merge them into one starting in January to save time and money. It will still be many months before a final decision on the future of the airport is known.
