Holidaymakers were stranded at Coventry Airport for nine hours after a holiday flight to Spain was delayed. The wait was made worse because a replacement plane, called in from another UK airport, was itself also delayed.
More than 100 people spent most of Monday at Coventry Airport after the 11:35 Thomsonfly.com flight to Valencia was delayed because of technical problems. The flight was booked by 110 passengers who had paid between £25 - £100 for their tickets. Two passengers even cancelled their trip and were given refunds, before the flight eventually took off at 19:05.
A spokesman for the airline said that they gave people £5 food vouchers to use at the airport cafe whilst they waited. She added that, had the full length of the delay been known at the outset, people would have been offered accommodation at a local airport hotel.
Passenger group, the Air Transport Users' Council, based in London, said the flight operator had treated passengers correctly. Spokesman James Fremantle said passengers dissatisfied with waiting longer than five hours would have been entitled to apply for a refund.
