Thompson to expand outside of Coventry airport
20.09.05
Low cost airline Thomsonfly.com has thrown down the gauntlet to other budget flight companies, by announcing that it is to expand its operations outside of Coventry Airport.
Thomsonfly.com has been the driving force behind the development of Coventry Airport, Baginton. It also operates at Bournemouth and Robin Hood Doncaster, but it is adding 8 new airports to its roster from May, including Gatwick, Birmingham, East Midlands and Manchester.
The expansion will put it in direct competition with a number of other low cost airlines, including easyJet and Ryanair. The scheduled flight from Birmingham, which will liftoff on May 1, will fly to Palma, Majorca, 5 times per week - with prices starting at £29.99 one way including taxes.
Two other low cost airlines plan to fly from Birmingham to Palma next summer - bmibaby and Flybe - and other low cost airlines will compete with Thomsonfly on all of the routes it plans to launch.
Explaining the reasons for the expansion, Guy Stephenson, commercial director of Thomsonfly, said: 'We believe in providing flight services to popular destinations at low fares from local airports, which our customers like because they are friendly and convenient.'
'However, we also have ambitions at a national level, which demands a presence in the UK's major cities. We offer flights to the places where people want to travel to - rather than trying to create demand for places that people may not even have heard of.'
The expansion will also mean that the Thomsonfly fleet will grow from 43 aircraft to 48. For more information visit www.thomsonfly.com.
