Customs officers seized over 30,000 cigarettes from passengers at Coventry Airport who were trying to bring too much tobacco into the country in a 24 hour blitz carried out earlier this month. A total of 33,900 cigarettes and just over 70 kilos of rolling tobacco were confiscated from just seven passengers. The duty evaded on the cigarettes was £5,600 and £7,921 on the tobacco.
Keith Morgan, Revenue & Customs detection manager at the airport, said: 'Most people keep to their legal entitlements but a minority of people will try to test and abuse the system. We will not stop in our efforts to disrupt and deter tobacco smuggling which robs the Treasury of some £3 billion a year in lost revenue, which could be funding vital public services such as hospitals and schools.'
