Armed police attended Coventry Airport to calm passengers caught up in huge delays late last week, it has been revealed. The incident happened on Friday, as holidaymakers were delayed up to 13 hours on Thomsonfly flights.
Hundreds of people were caught up in the backlog on Friday, understood to have been caused by broken down planes. Worst hit were flights to and from Jersey, with some passengers stranded at the airport from 07:30 until 21:45.
Angry passengers have described 'unprecedented chaotic scenes' at the airport, involving passengers waiting to travel to different parts of Europe. As families with children tried to cope with the delays, a group of young men heading off on a stag weekend decided to start celebrating early.
When things started to get out of hand, armed police who are based at the airport to deal with terrorist threats had to be called in to restore order. Passengers described the extraordinary scenes, where officers carrying machine guns were forced to deal with the unruly passengers.
