City Council outraged at Coventry Airport planning decision

Council leaders in Coventry have slammed the decision to refuse permission for a new passenger terminal at Coventry Airport announced on Friday - saying the move will hamper the city's ability to change for the better. City council leader Ken Taylor hit out at the decision by government planning chiefs and said the airport was vital to the future of Coventry and had helped to put the city on the map.
Councillor Taylor said: 'We are amazed and dismayed. Amazed that after dealing with all the important planning, access, environmental and airspace issues when John Prescott gave permission for an airport that could deal with 1 million passengers per annum - we are now told that that means nothing.'
'Dismayed that a government that says it supports the diversification of the British Economy should now prohibit £50 million of new investment and a 1000 new jobs in a city and subregion that has shown it can lead the way in creating the new economy that Britain needs to succeed in the 21st Century. Why are Ministers overriding their previous decision to support investment in Coventry?'
He said he understood the environmental concerns which Warwick District Council had but paid tribute to the airport officials who had addressed these issues. And Councillor Taylor pointed out that the airport has put the city 'on the map' as well as providing and supporting thousands of jobs. He said: 'Coventry Airport is a key part of our future.'
