Coventry Airport funding bid fails
14.04.11
A plan to create 1000 jobs around Coventry Airport has been rejected for Government funding, the Coventry Telegraph reports. It was among nine Coventry and Warwickshire bids to the new regional growth fund turned down yesterday, with only Jaguar Land Rover being among 50 winning bids nationally, scooping £450 million between them.
Multi-millionaire businessman Sir Peter Rigby, who bought the airport last year, wants to create 1000 jobs around the airport in Baginton, partly by leasing Coventry City Council land for industrial use, the newspaper understands. It was among confidential bids to the Government’s new £1.4 billion three-year fund – intended to help boost jobs outside London – which were endorsed by the new Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).
City Labour politicians said it was a ‘disappointment’ for the region. The airport is considering whether to continue with the project.
