Coventry Airport 'good for city economy'

Low-cost flights from Coventry Airport are beneficial to the city's economy, according to Coventry City Council. The economic benefits are the main reason the city council gave its backing to the flights, which were opposed by neighbouring authorities and people living nearby according to James Russell, the city council's head of planning and strategic transportation, who spoke yesterday at the ongoing public inquiry into the airport's expansion plans.
Mr Russell said: 'The airport has had beneficial effects on many businesses in the area. The economical benefits of the scheme are significant. This view is shared by a number of city businesses and by the chamber of commerce.'
The hearing, at Leamington Town Hall, was attended by representatives from the city council, Birmingham Airport, Coventry Airport and Warwick District Council, as well as the Council for the Protection of Rural England and a handful of residents. Birmingham Airport is against expansion, arguing that flights out of Coventry will use up limited airspace and hamper its own growth.
Coventry City Council's report said the expansion would be beneficial to the local economy - a survey showed more than a third of businesses in Coventry and Warwickshire use the airport, its location being the main attraction, while low-cost flights were the second greatest draw. It said 72 percent of its custom was business travel and 18 percent of companies had won new business because of their proximity to the airport.
