Coventry Airport reduces fees in bid to attract new flights
09.06.07
Coventry Airport has announced plans to attract more airlines and offer a wider range of destinations to passengers in the region. The airport is to cut the operating cost of flights so that it can expand the number of airlines offering regular services. Currently only Thomsonfly operate flights, with Wizz Air set to start flights to Katowice next month.
One of the steps to be taken is a reduction in landing fees from £16.30 per metric tonne to £10 per metric tonne, a cut of over 60%, meaning that the cost of operating an 80 tonne Boeing 737 will be reduced from £1340 to £800 to land. A fee levied on every passenger arrival has also been scrapped, while the fee for departing passengers has been reduced, and parking charges have also been cut.
Chris Orphanou, Coventry Airport's managing director, said: 'We are determined to make Coventry Airport as attractive as possible to potential airlines and private customers. This is one way we can demonstrate our resolve and our commitment to developing our route network.'
'Wizz Air commences services between Coventry to the Polish city of Katowice in July and we are confident that other airlines will realise the appeal of Coventry and follow suit.'
More than £5 million has been pumped into Coventry Airport over the past 18 months and Mr Orphanou is confident that planning approval will soon be secured for a new terminal building, as the airport aims to increase capacity from 980,000 to two million passengers per year.
