Coventry Airport set for major expansion
06.01.06
Dozens of new flights could be launched from Coventry Airport over the next few years, if major expansion work at the airport gets the go-ahead. TUI announced yesterday that it had sold the airport, but a public inquiry, due to start in Leamington Spa in two weeks, will decide whether the development finally goes ahead.
If the plans get the go ahead, then construction work is expected to be completed by 2008, enabling the airport to handle up to two million passengers a year. Airport parking and public transport links will also be improved, with more regular direct buses linking the airport with Coventry's main train station.
At present, Thomsonfly is the only airline to offer scheduled flights from Coventry, offering services to 15 European destinations. However, a number of low-cost airlines are reported to be interested in flying from Coventry airport too, with the airport's boss, Bill Savage, targeting destinations including as Tenerife, Geneva, Dublin, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Munich and Frankfurt.
