Coventry Airport blackout
04.07.08
Power was cut to more than 2,000 homes and businesses including Coventry Airport when thieves risked their lives to snatch reams of cable from an electricity substation earlier this week.
The blackout at Coventry Airport and Royal Mail's sorting and distribution depot happened after wiring was stripped from the site, in Oxford Road, Ryton-on-Dunsmore. Both businesses were forced to use generators to stop operations plunging into chaos.
Raiders burst through fencing, which rings the site, shortly after midnight on Wednesday. They removed fuses from the power transmitter, which carries 33,000 volts, before making off with the cable.
A police spokesman said that their actions not only endangered their own lives, but made the substation hazardous.
