Strike-hit passengers are bound for Coventry
03.12.05
Coventry Airport was today put on standby to take hundreds of flights from strike-hit Birmingham International. Passengers could be bussed to Coventry to pick up their flights, as a series of strikes look set to cripple Birmingham International over the festive period.
Eight days of action - including Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve - have been called by union Amicus in a dispute over two sacked workers. Birmingham Airport bosses are already drawing up plans to bus passengers to other airports to enable them to make the 300 flights a day the airport usually has.
Coventry Airport is one of three - along with East Midlands and Manchester - which would be used if the strikes go ahead. Although Coventry's Baginton airport can only take smaller aircraft to and from European destinations, it is likely to mean up to 400 extra flights over the eight days.
Amicus members at Birmingham voted two-to-one in favour of industrial action after a bitter row erupted over the sacking of two members of staff. The union, which represents more than 200 workers at the airport, claims allegations made against the two men are false, and is demanding their reinstatement or £100,000 in compensation.
