Safeguards sought on Coventry Airport expansion
03.11.05
Leaders of six West Midland district councils have asked for Government safeguards in return for dropping their opposition to the expansion of Coventry Airport. The councils intend to fight proposals for a 10,000 sq. m passenger terminal and airport parking for 3,425 cars unless their fears about competition between Coventry and Birmingham International are addressed.
The councils want to ensure that the development of Coventry should not threaten the viability of scheduled air services at Birmingham, which is planning to extend its existing runway and considering building a second runway.
They have asked for four guarantees:
1. Coventry's expansion must not prejudice the future growth of BIA
2. Environmental protection requirements proposed by Coventry must be improved.
3. Coventry must encourage more passengers to use public transport to and from the airport.
4. No more than two million passengers a year may use Coventry Airport.
The strategy is backed by Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull and Walsall councils - all of whom have a direct financial interest in Birmingham International.
