Coventry Airport served with winding up petition
01.12.09
Coventry Airport is facing an uncertain future after the company which runs it was served a petition to ‘wind up’ its business amid rumours of spiralling debt. Bosses at the city’s airport – which has been up for sale since May of this year – are due to appear in court next week.
The application was made to the High Court by HM Revenue and Customs. If the court grants the petition and makes the winding-up order, Coventry Airport will be placed into compulsory liquidation.
The petition was handed over to airport owners, West Midlands International Airport Ltd, on October 23 and a hearing is due to take place at London’s Royal Courts of Justice on Wednesday, December 9.
The airport, which lost its only passenger airline in 2008, has said it was operating normally (as a cargo terminal and a base for executive jets), but was aware of the petition and was ‘actively seeking a solution’. In a statement, it said it was not willing to make further comment while proceedings were taking place.
Coventry City Council, which owns the freehold to the airport, said they were ‘following the matter with interest and are awaiting the outcome of the High Court hearing in the next few days’.
