MP calls for Cardiff Airport expansion
31.07.08
Cynon Valley MP Ann Clwyd has raised the expansion of Cardiff Airport at Westminster, saying that it should be allowed to grow rather than centralising the growing aviation industry at London airports, the Cynon Valley Leader reports.
Speaking in the House of Commons, she said: ‘Surely it is time services from Cardiff Airport were able to fly to more destinations in the world.’ Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy responded: ‘From Cardiff you can already go directly to 61 destinations - from Alicante to Warsaw. However, Ann Clwyd is right that the business community in Wales in particular would like more direct flights, for example to Germany and Belgium. Cardiff Airport is working on that together with the Welsh Assembly.'
'Although the airport is expected to increase its share of the growing aviation industry in the UK, many people from South Wales will still need to travel outside Wales to fly to their destinations.'
Ms Clwyd said: ‘It seems ludicrous people are travelling long distances to already congested areas of the country when regional airports like Cardiff are on their doorsteps.’
