Scottish airline Highland Airways - which operates the Cardiff to Anglesey route along with flights from the Scottish islands - has been placed into administration after poor weather compounded difficulties caused by the recession. PricewaterhouseCoopers has been appointed administrators by the directors, with 100 jobs at risk.
The airline operated nine aircraft on routes including Inverness and Oban to the Western Isles, and Cardiff to Anglesey. Its business also included corporate flights and delivering newspapers to Scottish islands. However, all Highland Airways flights were suspended yesterday and PwC said the company is contacting passengers who were due to fly with Highland in the coming weeks.
No refunds will be made for cancelled flights and passengers are being advised to contact their credit card or insurance company. Bruce Cartwright, joint administrator, said it was ‘inevitable’ there would be ‘a substantial number of redundancies’, as the management had been trying unsuccessfully for two months to secure new funding to rescue the business.
