Cardiff Airport train station shuttle under threat again
25.02.12
The future of a free shuttle bus between Cardiff Airport and its nearest train station under threat, the South Wales Echo reports. The service, which has an annual subsidy of £135,000, is being reviewed against the background of cuts to bus subsidies across South Wales.
The Cardiff Airport station at Rhoose opened in 2005, but service came under threat in May 2010 when airport managers withdrew funding, saying they could no longer afford to provide a £100,000 subsidy for a shuttle bus that carried fewer than 1000 passengers a week, making it unviable. At the time the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the Welsh Government stepped in to finance the two-mile service. But the subsidy is due to end in March and the Welsh Government is considering whether it should be continued.
