Cardiff Airport express bus service takes step forward
24.11.10
Plans for an express bus service that would slash the transfer time between Cardiff Airport and the city centre have taken a step forward, the South Wales Echo reports. The Assembly Government has begun its search for a commercial bus firm to operate the route, which would run every half an hour with a journey time under 30 minutes.
Airlines, including Flybe and bmibaby, have warned the capital could lose business to Bristol because of Cardiff Airport’s poor transport links. In a tender notice, the Assembly has said it would now be prepared to pay towards the cost of purchasing or leasing ‘high quality’ vehicles. The notice estimates the cost of the public transport scheme at between £500,000 and £1m, but does not specify whether the service will be subsidised.
A Cardiff Airport spokeswoman said it was very keen to see a high frequency and high quality direct bus link. She said the airport was unable to fund off-site public transport services itself, but was encouraged by the development in the tender process.
