Cardiff Airport boss calls for APD cuts

24.10.11

Cardiff Airport managers have called on the Welsh Government to push for devolved powers on air passenger duty (APD), which could significantly improve its chances of attracting new airlines [if the rate is reduced], Wales Online reports.

The Northern Ireland Executive has been given the go-ahead from next month to cut APD on long haul flights. This will see the current economy seat charge of £60 being cut to just £12 and for business and first class passengers it will be reduced from £120 to just £60. Belfast competes with flights from Dublin, where the tax is just €3.

The head of commercial operations at Cardiff Airport, Spencer Birns, said the Welsh Government should press the UK Government for APD to be devolved. He said that the airport is continuing its discussions with the US airline Delta over a route from Cardiff to New York, and with Emirates.
