Cardiff Airport expect record Christmas passengers
18.12.07
Cardiff Airport is expecting up to 5% more passengers to travel this Christmas than last year - a new festive record - as thousands of passengers swap Wales for the sunnier climes of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. The airport is even running flights to the Mediterranean on Christmas Day.
Peter Phillips, head of marketing and communication at Cardiff Airport, said: 'We are expecting to be up 3% to 5% this Christmas, but a lot of people leave it until late to book. Most of the travelling up to Christmas will be people returning home in both directions - the popular flights before Christmas tend to be those to and from Scotland, Ireland and other parts of the UK.'
December 20 is set to be the most popular departure date, according to holiday website lastminute.com, with up to 11% more Britons spending Christmas and New Year abroad this year than last year. The huge boom in budget airlines and low-cost flights plus the weak dollar are fuelling the winter getaways.
