The mother of a severely autistic 11-year-old boy found dead in a hotel room near Cardiff Airport appeared in court yesterday charged with his murder. Yvonne Freaney was found holding the hand of her dead son, Glen, in the room at the Sky Plaza Hotel on Saturday after a family member had alerted police. Officers believe that he may have been dead for at least a day.
Mrs Freaney, 48, whose husband Mark is a former RAF officer, was remanded in custody by magistrates in Barry, South Wales, accused of murdering her son between last Thursday and last Sunday. Forensic science officers were examining the room yesterday and studying film from two CCTV cameras at the entrance.
Glen was the youngest of the Freaneys’ three children. The family lived in Penarth before moving to Barry. South Wales Police have appealed for witnesses who may have seen Mrs Freaney before she and Glen checked into their room. They said that officers arrived at the hotel within three and a half minutes of the alarm being raised.
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Jones, of the force’s major crime team, said: ‘This is a tragic murder of a young boy and I can confirm that it is domestic-related. I would also like to reassure the public that we are not looking to trace any other person in connection with this incident.’
