Cardiff Airport rail bus link to end
15.04.10
The shuttle bus that links Cardiff Airport with its nearest train station is to be withdrawn at the end of next month, and could be replaced by an ad hoc taxi service. Airport managers say they can no longer afford the £100,000 for the service, which started in 2005 following the opening of a new station at Rhoose. This is similar to the events at East Midlands Airport in a story we reported just last week.
The shuttle bus was launched after a £17m line carrying trains between Cardiff and Bridgend opened in 2005. However, the airport said it costs more than £100,000 a year to run but carries less than than 1000 passengers per week. It said funding would end on May 31.
The Welsh Assembly Government said it would work with all parties to see if the two-mile bus link could be saved. The Vale of Glamorgan council said it was disappointed with the airport's decision, but a taxi firm was interested in providing an alternative ad hoc service for the route.
