Plane Stupid to target aviation and UK airports this week
14.08.07
Passengers using Cardiff Airport could have their journeys disrupted this week by a climate-change protest group banned from Heathrow Airport. The group, Plane Stupid, said yesterday the Welsh Assembly Government had set Wales as a target for protests by launching short-haul flights within Wales already covered by a train service.
Last week BAA obtained an injunction banning activists from Plane Stupid from protesting at any airport owned by BAA. The protesters are now turning their attention to other targets - both other UK airports and the aviation industry - starting with a demo yesterday in Flintshire. Six protesters were removed by guards from a barge carrying a new wing for an Airbus A380 superjumbo. No arrests were made.
The group plans to target other aviation sites this week. Spokesman Graham Thompson said: 'The injunction only precludes us from BAA's property. It doesn't preclude all airports. We wouldn't rule out protesting at Cardiff airport,' describing the new, WAG-subsidised Anglesey-Cardiff air service as 'a perfect example of the type of thing that we're opposed to - grotesquely unnecessary flights'
