Loss of bmibaby sees Cardiff Airport passengers drop by 14%
09.03.12
Cardiff Airport saw its passenger numbers fall by almost 200,000 last year, the South Wales Echo reports. The number of people using the airport fell by 14% in 2011 to 1.2 million, down from 1.39 million in 2010. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) figures also show 900,000 fewer people used the airport than compared to four years ago.
Steve Hodgetts, Cardiff Airport’s commercial and planning director, said cutbacks by bmibaby and the eventual loss of the budget airline last October had cost the airport almost 500,000 passengers over the past 18 months. He added that there had been a 'deterioration in the charter market.' and that 'air passenger duty is choking off some of the demand we previously enjoyed.’
