Cardiff Airport renews ‘terror order’ road restrictions
08.06.10
Special orders to restrict road access aimed at preventing potential terrorist attacks on Cardiff Airport are set to be renewed, the South Wales Echo reports. The orders focus on roads around the terminal and are made under the Anti-Terrorism (Temporary) Order 2010. They were first introduced in June 2007 and mean access to the airport is one-way only.
The orders, which have been produced by Vale of Glamorgan Council following a recommendation by Peter Vaughan, Chief Constable of South Wales Police, give police the power to prevent cars, bicycles or pedestrians using the A4226 and B4265 airport access roads, if required. They will last for 18 months and are aimed at ‘avoiding, reducing the likelihood or danger connected with terrorism or for a purpose relating to danger or damage connected with terrorism’.
A spokesman for the airport said: ‘There will be no change to the current situation at the airport. It is simply a technical issue that these orders have to be renewed.’ Signs connected with the orders will be erected on the roads.
