Bird expert rejects Cardiff Airport swans fears
06.10.10
A lake near Cardiff Airport is being cleared of swans because they pose a threat to passing planes, the South Wales Echo reports. But claims the birds pose a danger to planes flying from the airport have been rejected by a swan rescue expert.
The Knap Lake in Barry will be drained this week as part of a cleaning operation and a strategy to reduce the number of swans there. The theory is that, by periodically draining the lake, fewer swans will return each time it is refilled. There are currently about 20 swans at the lake.
Previous suggestions that the lake should be permanently drained, or that fencing should be erected around it to make it more difficult for the swans to fly out, have been rejected. Councillors, residents and tourism officers fear such drastic action would ruin the attraction of the lake.
