Thomsonfly axe five routes from Bournemouth Airport
28.11.07
Thomsonfly is axing five routes from Bournemouth Airport next summer because of lack of demand. But another two routes will be launched from the South Coast airport. The changes mean that the routes in and out of Bournemouth can be catered for with one Boeing 737 aircraft instead of the current two.
Axed from Thomsonfly's summer schedule, which starts on May 1, are flights to Alicante, Pisa, Salzburg, Tenerife and Valencia. The new routes are Dalaman, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast and and Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete. The changes mean that the airline will operate 7 routes (Faro, Ibiza, Malaga, Palma Mallorca, Paphos, Dalaman and Heraklion) from Bournemouth next summer.
Bournemouth Airport spokeswoman Sally Windsor said Alicante and Pisa are operated by Ryanair and Tenerife by Palmair so they were not destinations lost to people wanting to fly out of Bournemouth. Salzburg and Valencia will be lost, but Dalaman and Crete gained, 'so the number of destinations remains the same, so there's no net loss to the airport,' she said.
The airline is talking to pilots, cabin crew, engineers and trade unions based at Bournemouth about the potential effects of the reduction in aircraft numbers.
