Bournemouth Airport expansion given go-ahead
21.07.07
The planned redevelopment and expansion at Bournemouth Airport will start 'as soon as possible', a spokesman said, after the government final approval of the scheme this week.
The work will see the airport terminal redeveloped, with a new international arrivals hall and departure lounges including new shops and restaurants, costing £32m. Aircraft parking stands will rise from 4 to 6, to accommodate aircraft the size of a Boeing 737, and more airport parking will be added to accommodate increasing passenger numbers.
Airport bosses drew up the plan to accommodate a predicted trebling of passenger numbers within 10 years. The scheme has already been approved by Christchurch Borough Council and has now received confirmation from the Government Office South West.
Peter Duffy, managing director at Bournemouth Airport, said: 'Now we can begin to deliver the vision we set out in our master plan and deliver an airport of which the region can be proud. We plan to be handling 3 million passengers within 10 years, so it's important that we start work as soon as possible.'
The redevelopment work will be spread over a 4 or 5 year period as the airport grows. The council has legal powers to control nighttime flights and engine testing for the first time under the agreement.
