Bournemouth Airport celebrates busiest ever year
20.01.07
Last year was the busiest ever at Bournemouth Airport, which saw a 16 percent rise in passenger numbers to just under one million.
End-of-year figures just published show 955,160 passengers flew in and out of the terminal during 2006 - an increase of more than 125,000 over the previous record set last year. And during December there was a year-on-year increase of 33 percent in scheduled flights, mainly due to the introduction of three new Ryanair routes this winter to Madrid, Pisa and Shannon.
Airport chiefs are now looking forward to another busy year in 2007 with the arrival of three new operators, Wizzair, Olympic Holidays and the Goldtrail, adding routes to Poland, Crete, and Turkey respectively. In addition Thomsonfly will be re-introducing its service to Valencia and will continue its Prague route throughout the summer.
On the ground work is also expected to start on the airport's ambitious £32 million redevelopment programme, subject to obtaining the necessary planning approvals.
Airport managing director Peter Duffy said: 'We are delighted with the passenger figures for 2006 and believe they reflect the level of commitment that the airport has to providing excellent choice and value for the region's travellers.'
