Killer bees found on Bournemouth Airport plane
06.05.11
A hive of African bees were discovered on a plane that had flown into Bournemouth Airport, the Daily Echo reports. The bees were discovered in the tailfin of a private plane, and experts from the National Bee Unit were asked to investigate. African honeybees are bigger than British bees, and if they interbreed, they can produce a hybrid labeled killer bees.
The plane was stored in a hangar on Bournemouth Airport’s south east business area whilst the National Bee Unit, a division of the Food and Environment Research Agency, took samples. A beekeeper was also called out, but could not re-home them, so a pest controller was asked to kill the bees.
In America, Africanised honeybees are labeled ‘killer bees’ because they are more easily provoked and sting in greater numbers, although their venom is no more dangerous than that of European bees.
