Coventry terminal rejection boosts Birmingham Airport's expansion plans
24.06.07
THE Government's rejection of Coventry Airport's plans for a new passenger terminal capable of handling 2 million passengers a year has opened the door for Birmingham Airport to launch its own expansion scheme, a spokesman for the airport said.
A spokeswoman for Birmingham airport said: 'We will take the planning decision [on Coventry Airport] into account when finalising our own masterplan, which will be published later this summer.'
The decision to reject the Coventry plans (reported here) for a terminal to cater for two million passengers a year was taken jointly by the Department of Communities and Local Government and the Department for Transport.
An inspector who conducted a lengthy public inquiry last year recommended that planning permission should be refused. At the hearing, Birmingham Airport raised concerns about an airspace conflict with Coventry and said that air travellers from the region were already well catered for by its services and those at East Midlands airport.
