The latest advice for drivers heading for UK airports
01.07.07
Passengers travelling by car to any UK airport face increased security and are advised to allow extra time for journey. We have set out below an airport-by-airport breakdown of the latest advice for travellers, especially those dropping off or picking up from airports (the list is in alphabetical order):
Aberdeen
The pick-up and drop-off zone is open, and there are no reported delays.
Belfast International
No change to drop-off procedures. Passengers are can be dropped off at the front of the terminal building but not picked up.
Belfast City
The area immediately in front of the airport will now be designated a drop-off only zone. People collecting passengers from the the airport must park in the short stay car park. Parking is free in this area for the first 15 minutes only.
Birmingham Airport
Set down is closed so passengers being dropped off need to park in the short-stay parking area, which is operated by NCP. The car park operator is waiving the charge for those dropping off without any waiting time (so you have to drop and drive away).
Bristol
The area in front of the terminal building is closed to vehicles with the exception of the airport's own car park buses and the Flyer express coach service. Drivers are being directed to use the rapid pick up car park if dropping off passengers at the airport.
Cardiff
It is not possible to drive to the front of the terminal building. Drivers are being directed to the short term car park. The first 20 minutes of in the car park will be free.
East Midlands
There is no change to drop-off procedures as the airport has no terminal-side drop-off zone. Drivers are directed to the short stay car park.
Edinburgh
Traffic delays affecting those arriving by yesterday ranged from 40 minutes to over an hour. It is not possible to drive up to the terminal and the short stay car park was closed too.
Gatwick
The drop-off zone at the South Terminal has reopened but part the North Terminal upper forecourt remains closed and passengers are being encouraged to use the short-stay car park for drop-off and pick-up at a charge of £1 for the first 15 minutes.
Glasgow
Procedures have returned to normal, apart from a heightened police presence. The airport had reopened its curbside drop off and pick-up zones for those arriving by car. Increased traffic security means delays of up to 30 minutes for those arriving by car.
Heathrow
Drop-off lanes closest to the airport have been closed, with passengers diverted to short term car parks. The usual charge for short term parking has been waived, so the first 20 minutes is free, but after that the normal rate applies: £3.90 for up to an hour, £5.80 for 90 minutes and £7.40 for up to two hours. Traffic into the airport is always busy.
Leeds Bradford
The area in front of the terminal building is currently closed to vehicles. Drivers are being directed to short stay parking to drop off or collect passengers.
Liverpool
No change to pick-up and drop-off procedures, which was moved from outside the terminal building 18 months ago owing to concerns over security and congestion.
London City
Road blocks are causing 'severe delays' to those arriving by car. The airport is strongly recommending that passengers arrive by bus or tube.
Luton
There are no added security measures in place, just a small change to the drop off zone to move the taxi rank further from the terminal building.
Manchester
People arriving by car are being directed to a short-stay car park to drop-off and pick up, where they can park for free for 15 minutes.
Newcastle
Newcastle Airport continues to operate normally. All car parking facilities remain.
Southampton
Curbside drop-off is permitted but concrete blocks have been placed in front of the airport windows as a precaution.
Stansted
Curbside drop-off has been diverted to a section of the short-stay car park. There is no charge for using this service, and Essex Police says traffic is moving freely into the airport, but passengers are advised to leave extra time because the walk to the terminal building is slightly longer.
