There is a lot happening at UK airports at the moment. Heathrow airport, the worlds busiest international airport with 65.9 million passengers in 2009, received Government backing for a new runway (and sixth terminal), but this may change in 2010. It has started work on a new terminal called Heathrow East, which will eventually replace Terminal 2 (already closed) and Terminal 1. Gatwick Airport, the worlds busiest single runway airport (two terminals, but one runway), with 34.2 million passengers in 2008 continues to hope for a new runway in 2020 and was be sold in 2009 by BAA to GIP.
These two London airports still dominate in terms of flights and passenger numbers, but regional airports growing at a much faster rate. The two other large London Airports - Stansted Airport and Luton Airport - where the UK's original budget airline started - look set to grow at a steady rate in 2010. Stansted airport could still be the site the first of the UK's new runways some time after 2013, if it can get planning approval. Luton Airport scrapped plans for a new runway in 2008.
But it is at the the regional airports - led by Manchester, Birmingham (which had a record year in 2008), Edinburgh, Glasgow, Newcastle and Bristol - where the growth was much more dramatic prior to the recession, and could be again if the economy picks up. These airports were transformed by the emergence budget airlines, all doubling in size over the last 10 years and aiming to double again over the next 10. Whether a return to economic growth will see this resume is doubtful.
These smaller UK airports were not content with with short haul routes, the larger regionals picking up inter-continental routes too, and many, including Belfast, Cardiff, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool, East Midlands and Southampton have set increasing the number of routes they offer as a key target, even during the current recession.
Then there are smaller UK airports and even new airports looking for routes and local flights to a growing number of UK residents. Many, including Aberdeen, Bournemouth, Durham Tees Valley, Kent, London City, Norwich, Prestwick, Robin Hood have all set 1 million passengers a year as a target. None will achieve it this year, and some my even struggle as Coventry did in 2009.
