Ryanair increase check in and baggage fees again
29.04.08
Ryanair has increased luggage charges and charges for using the airport check-in service for the second time this year. The budget airline announced yesterday that passengers pre-booking baggage will now have to pay £8 (€10) each way – the charge went from £5 to £7 (€6 to €9) in January – while those using the check-in desk rather than the online service will pay £4 (€5), up from £3 (€4). The charges are effective from next Tuesday, May 5.
Europe's biggest low-cost airline has said the increases are aimed at encouraging more people to travel with hand luggage only. The company has pledged to continue raising fees until half its passengers check in online. It said in a statement: ‘Ryanair encourages passengers to avoid these charges altogether by travelling with our 10kg hand luggage allowance and checking in online.'
Industry analysts have suggested soaring fuel prices are the reason behind the increase in baggage and check-in costs. It would appear that, just as full service airlines are increasing their fuel surcharges (BA increased its surcharge today) – which Ryanair lambastes – the budget airline has also found a way of increasing its surcharges to cover increasing fuel costs. We wonder if the management at Aer Lingus might want to comment.....
